Level 1 Player (MT Novel) - Chapter 39
Chapter 39 – The Heart of the Werewolf King II
“That’s a lot of them.”
And indeed, so many monsters had crossed the dimensional gate that it was impossible to determine their number at once. There were not dozens, but several hundred! There were so many that the name of the dungeon had to be changed from Horned Tortoise Dungeon to Werewolf Dungeon.
– How often does this happen…? – I asked my partner.
– Sometimes it happens, but rather rarely. Often in such cases, simply change the level and the name of the dungeon.
Monsters, just like ordinary animals, can easily change the place of their habitat. In particular, it all depends on what kind of monsters live on the other side of the spatial gate.
– Let’s deal with these fellows first, and then report back.
– All right,” I answered meekly.
– Then I’m off,” replied Lee Soo-young and, pushing off with four paws, jumped into the thick of it.
I followed my partner, drawing my vampire sword from its sheath.
As soon as they saw us, the werewolves immediately pounced on us with a terrifying roar. But those monsters weren’t serious opponents for us, since they weren’t more than level eighty, thus Lee Soo Young was at least twice as strong as those monsters, and I was all three times as strong.
After a while, the Werewolves who had attacked us howled and retreated, and an individual twice the size of the uninvited guests in the area appeared from the spatial gate at the same moment.
– A werewolf boss? – Lee Soo-young muttered in surprise.
My partner was definitely right, since I had already seen such a creature in the monster directory. It was definitely the leader of the Werewolf pack. Often the boss level could range around level 100-110.
– I’ll take him! – said the girl and rushed into the attack.
“In the meantime, I’ll mop up the others in the area.”
I wasn’t worried about Lee Soo Young, since I knew this boss wasn’t her thing, so I went off to finish off the remaining Werewolves with peace of mind. I had to speed up a little in order to gather as many stones as possible.
Slowly the number of monsters began to dwindle, many of them exhausted. But I didn’t let up and kept chopping left and right. Those who tried to escape were killed by active skills like magic missile and fireball.
“Hmm, aren’t they over yet? – I thought and turned my head in the direction of where Lee Soo Young was fighting. – W-wow… More like a great battle between two monsters.”
The snow leopard against the leader of the Werewolves. A fierce battle was fought. But only Lee Sooyoung had to retreat a bit, as it wasn’t as easy to win as the girl had originally thought it would be. In addition, the Werewolf leader had managed to inflict many wounds on her.
“I must help her!”
Turning around, I ran at the Werewolf leader with Lee Sooyoung. When he saw me, he roared and began to emit a black and red magical light, and then he attacked the snow leopard girl with all his might. Lee Soo Young was able to block it, but her paws were stained with blood at the same moment. The werewolf wasted no time and sank its sharp teeth into my partner’s neck. There was a crunch, and her body crashed to the ground. If this went on, I, too, might lose my life.
“Magic missile!” – I thought to myself and activated the active skill.
“Dodged it.”
The Werewolf King turned out to be pretty fast. He looped around, but he didn’t let my partner out of his grip. Then I tried to shorten the distance between us by lunging at him with shaking hands. The werewolf opened its mouth and threw Lee Soo Young’s body right at me. I hastily hid my sword in its scabbard and caught it. The girl’s whole body was covered in blood.
– Healing,” I said and activated the skill.
But the girl’s wounds were too many. Besides, her neck was still bleeding. While I retrieved the Healing Potion I’d gotten from Shin Yun Ah from subspace, the Werewolf that had briefly retreated came at me again. By bringing my vampire sword forward, I managed to block the lunge in our direction.
“He’s pretty brainy, isn’t he?”
The werewolf was no longer looking at Lee Soo-young; he was poking around for my weaknesses, or just waiting for the right moment. Of course, I could have used something stronger to bring Lee Soo Young to her feet right away, but I waited for a certain moment.
“It looks like he’s using his associates as expendable material…”
I came to this conclusion after the Werewolves tried to wear me down. But the chieftain’s plan was fruitless. My level difference with the other werewolves was so great that I wasted little of my magic and stamina, fighting off his “servants. On the contrary, I regained those stamina with my vampire sword.
I attacked the werewolf chieftain at length. He, in turn, didn’t pay attention to me, but stared at the weakened and exhausted Lee Soo-young with his eyes.

Yes, the Werewolf chief wasn’t the only one I had to deal with. The werewolves who had survived were looking in the girl’s direction, too. The monsters, along with their leader, attacked me systematically, like a mother protecting her children. In this position it was difficult for me to counterattack them, trying to stay in one place.
“I’ll try to deal with them all one by one…”
First I need to deal with the rest of the werewolves. So I activated my magic skills and started shooting at them with everything I had: magic missiles, ice missiles, fire missiles, fireballs, and fire spears. I deployed all of these active skills in sequence, one after the other. The werewolves that were hit by the projectiles were killed on the spot. After a wave of quick deaths, the rest of the werewolves began to hesitate, clearly not finding their place.
At this point, I felt like a dangerous mage and a healer at the same time. And I was finally able to focus on my actions, since no one was trying to attack me. Besides, I kept using the Healing skill. I tried to activate it as often as possible, so that I could heal my partner as quickly as possible with this seemingly simple skill.
“Well, at least I didn’t have to use the Healing Potion…”
But unfortunately, the girl had not yet regained consciousness. The only good thing was that the critical moment was already behind her.
“Well, so far I’ve been lucky.
I handled the regular werewolves with ease, even if the main headache was still their leader.
“Typical outfielder!”
(P.p.: Outfielder is a general term in baseball for one of the three players who occupies a defensive position in the outfield, the furthest part of the outfield from home.
Compared to normal werewolves, their leader had an entirely different level. Of course, I was no slouch, either; my magic and stamina were high enough. The same was true of speed and marksmanship. But the werewolf chieftain wasn’t so easy, since he could avoid my attacks.
“Let’s see if you can dodge it!”
I tensed up and tried to harness as much magical power as possible, then activated one skill. A destructive wave engulfed the entire dungeon. In an instant, the forest caught fire, froze, and shattered into small pieces. You could see that the strength began to leave the werewolf chief, so he decided to flee from the battlefield. Exactly, the chieftain immediately forgot about our battle and chose the surest solution: fleeing.
“Too late!”
No sooner had the werewolf leader gone far than a huge wall of ice appeared in his path.
The ice wall is a rare skill that I managed to win at the auction.
Now that all paths were blocked, the chieftain had to change his course in the blink of an eye. Before he knew it, I immediately reactivated my ranged skills. A huge number of projectiles flew into one spot. The air shuddered and the werewolf king fell dead.
“Pebbles and objects, come on show up, I’m waiting for you!”
I activated subspace and began collecting the fallen gifts. Now there was no need to keep an eye on Lee Soo-young, since I had killed anyone who could harm her. And no, I wasn’t ashamed of my “greed,” because of the great difference in levels the girl wouldn’t have gotten a single stone or item anyway.
“I did take down the boss personally, after all. I wonder what he will give me? – I thought and walked over to where the monster died. – What is it?”
At the spot where I had finished off the werewolf leader lay an object shaped like a heart. I hastily picked it up.
[Werewolf Chieftain’s Heart (Rare)]
– Lets you transform into a Werewolf Chieftain for 60 minutes.
– Increases strength, agility, and endurance by 30% for the duration of the transformation.
– When the time limit expires, strength, agility, and endurance are reduced by 10%.
Directions: Eat.
Nothing unusual, except for the fact that it transforms into a werewolf chieftain. Besides, one of the advantages of this skill is a 30% increase in strength, agility and stamina! But this advantage has one disadvantage. Reduction of these characteristics by 10% after the miraculous transformation is completed… Definitely, this skill is not for ordinary Players.
“But I’m different, aren’t I?”
With the points I can acquire any “disposable” skill. Of course I’m glad I could get at least something, but it had better be a skill book after all.
“Well, it’s still not bad.”
Anyway, I’m also happy that I was able to get a rare level item. On the other hand, I still got a large number of stones.
“Now we can get out of here.”
I picked up my partner and we walked out of the dungeon.
***
After getting out of the dungeon and putting Lee Sooyoung into the car, I immediately called the Players’ Association. After I outlined the whole situation, help came immediately.
– Is Soo Young alright? – Seo Tae Chul who arrived on the scene with the backup team asked.
– Yes, I was able to patch up her wounds a little, but I don’t know if she needs to go to a hospital.
– Thank you, Hyun Seong. If it wasn’t for you, it wouldn’t have ended well.
– I’m part of the team, so it’s okay for me to help my teammates.
Despite what I said, Seo Tae Chul continued to thank me. After talking to the team, I decided to go back to the dungeon.
Eventually, we had to change the level and name of this dungeon because Werewolves, not Horned Turtles, kept appearing from the spatial gate. While we were figuring things out, my work time had just come to an end, so I hurried off to hunt. I had a good outfit now, and after a day’s sleep at work, I didn’t feel tired at all.
***
After the hunt I went back to the branch of the Players’ Association. The purpose of my visit was the funds I wanted for unscheduled work. To my surprise, I found all my colleagues in the same place where we had parted hours before.
– Hi, Hyun Seong,” So Tae Chul greeted me cheerfully.
The others only slightly nodded their heads in greeting.
– Thanks for saving me,” Lee Soo-young said, leaning all the way down to ninety degrees.
– I would have helped you anyway…
Actually, I just did what I had to do.
– All of yesterday’s lineup is in.
– Ha ha, I finished all my business yesterday, hunted and came to work again. I think our Hyun Seong did the same thing, didn’t he?
– That’s right. You can not only make money here, but also relax.
– I think so too.
Surprisingly, the conversation we started with Seo Tae Chul was joined by the other team members one by one.
– Can I ask how much your outfit costs when you add it all up? – Kim Chan-woo, the Player who worked for the Association instead of the military, asked me.
– I don’t know exactly, I rented most of it from the Players Association, and got my sword and mantle while hunting.
– You rented it?
– I did.
I saw that So Tae Chul’s jaw almost dropped in surprise.
– You’re like a rising star! I thought at first that you were someone from a rich family, it’s really rare to find someone who can hold items of a rare level.
– Yeah, you’re going to be rich… Before the Awakening, I worked on a construction site!
Upon hearing my answer, my colleagues’ faces showed surprise. Especially Lee Soo-Young was the most surprised.
