Level 1 Player (MT Novel) - Chapter 1
Chapter 1: Prologue
A guy in dirty shabby clothes crossed the corridor and stood in front of one of the doors.
He opened it and saw a familiar setting. It was a narrow room where a man could hardly exist. No windows or daylight. In other words, a dormitory.
The bloody tired guy collapsed on the bed, muttering something to himself. He put this very important activity aside for a while and changed his clothes. His whole body ached and ached. He wanted to rest at least for a while. He thought he was used to this work, but it seems he was mistaken.
No, it was impossible to get used to such hard work. He felt tired all the time.
The boy sighed heavily. He was tired not only physically, but also mentally. His whole life was like an endless “Groundhog Day”. Every day was like a squirrel in a wheel, with no hope of a normal future.
Nevertheless, even if it was hard work, it paid well. Among his colleagues there were many who did not think of high wages. But he himself did not throw money away. On the contrary, he saved, gritting his teeth. But the money was never enough anyway. It all went to his father’s medical care.

My name is Choi Hyun Seong. I’m 27 years old. Three years ago, I was just an ordinary student, but my father was diagnosed with an incurable disease. I will tell you a story that is hard to believe, but everything you will read is true.
It all started 19 years ago when a portal from another dimension suddenly appeared. It had unimaginable consequences. A new power appeared in our world: magic. For mankind it became both a blessing and a curse. At first, people suffered from it. Monsters emerged from the portal, destroying everything in their path. However, with the advent of magic and Players with modern weapons, this problem was solved. Hunting monsters was now a lucrative business. So the advent of the portal came to be considered a blessing. For my family, however, it became a curse. With the advent of the gateway, new diseases also fell on people’s heads. Many of them were connected to magic. One of them, the effect of reverse magic, afflicted my father. And this was the only disease that could be dealt with at all. Get the stones.
There were several kinds of stones that could be used to heal it, but only one suitable to create an inhibitor that would slow down the disease.
My family was now completely dependent on it, so my mother took a second job. She used to work in a factory. After my father fell ill, she had to quit her job and wash dishes in a restaurant until late at night.
Her older sister, who was saving up for a wedding, also gave most of her salary to pay her hospital bills. And as soon as her shift at her main job ended, she would go to a part-time job.
I took a sabbatical and immediately started looking for a job. The only problem was the expensive treatment. The material used to make the inhibitor was the stone of a rare named monster. Of course, money was not enough. What my mother, my older sister, and I earned was woefully inadequate. The family budget was slowly melting away. There was no hope, so life seemed like hell. But we couldn’t let my father die. And, as hard as our hearts were, we hoped for medication to come quickly. We had to be strong.

So three years went by. At first I was patient, thinking that a cure was being developed. But time slipped through my fingers and the waiting was replaced by despair.
“It would be great if I became a Player.”
Players.
The reason for the expensive treatment was that the raw materials from which the stones were obtained were used in different areas.
The Players mined that very raw material. They earned enormous sums of money that ordinary people could not even imagine. Who were these Gamblers? They went beyond the concept of “human.” They became superhumans. They broke rocks with their bare hands, jumped over buildings, emitted fire and ice from their palms.
I envied such Players, and hoped to catch my luck by the tail.

It seemed to me that by becoming one of them, I could escape from the grim reality. But the mechanism of becoming a Player was unclear. There was no pattern, so many people thought that becoming a Player was like winning the lottery. One chance in a million, so you just had to be damn lucky. Except I haven’t been lucky in 19 years.
– I want to wake up a Gambler. Especially strong and violent. I’d run away from this reality if only I could become one…
I grinned. If all it took was the will, everyone would be a Player.
– I need to take a bath and get some sleep.
I was supposed to go back to the construction site tomorrow. I should have gone to bed sooner so I could get some rest. However…
At that moment a bright light enveloped my body.
And a window appeared before my eyes with an inscription that looked like the miracle I had hoped for.
[Congratulations on your awakening.]
